Aliza Baltz, Curator of Birds for the Philadelphia Zoo, recently returned from the island of Tierra del Fuego, near the southernmost tip of South America, as part of an expedition from Richard Stockton College tracking the migration route of the Red Knot bird.  Read her blog entries from Tierra del Fuego here!

We stay in the park for several days and have lots of great sightings of Andean Condors soaring over camp.

We pack up the camp and plan to stay in the hospitality center near the ferry for an early start tomorrow.

We stop briefly at Cerro Sombrero to thank the Mayor for the use of their new facility and then we are off as it is a full day’s drive to Porvenir.

A group of juvenile Magellanic penguins decides we are interesting and swims in to shore for a closer look.

We stop at the hostel in town to arrange for showers and run into the Mayor again.

High tide is around 9:30 tonight so we head out about 9:00pm and see our largest group of shorebirds yet; about 400 Red knots and about 3300 Hudsonian godwits.

This morning, we get the closest we have to a flock of shorebirds, finding 2 groups of Godwits/Knots feeding at the shoreline.

It is difficult to adjust to the daylight hours, this close to Antarctica and we have daylight from about 5:30 am until 10:00 at night.

Day 3 - Our first full day in Tierra del Fuego starts out with a walk out to the shoreline to scan for flocks of red knots.

Day 2 - All goes well until we get to Santiago Chile and find that our flight to Punta Arenas has been cancelled.
