Bear Country

Completed in 1980, Bear Country replaced the Zoo's historic bear pits originally constructed in 1874. In this new land of gushing waterfalls, babbling brooks and cool, deep pools, you'll discover an array of burly bears from around the world-sloth bears, spectacled bears, polar bears and, occasionally, bears from other zoos.

Ben, a nine-year-old Asiatic black bear from Cohanzick Zoo in Bridgeton, NJ is visiting Philadelphia for a while. He began his stay in April of 2002 so that his exhibit in New Jersey could be renovated. Ben has been such a great guest, that we've asked for him to stay a bit longer. Although he started out quite shy, he has really become much more adventurous and makes a great addition to Bear Country. Please look for him on your next visit!
