Habitats and Adaptations
Grades 2 through 6

Animal Olympians

Turn your classroom into an Animal Olympics. Students jump, run and stretch to learn about animal adaptations while practicing math and measuring. Recommended for grades 2-6, download the Animal Olympians worksheets and teacher notes.  This activity works well as an ice breaker to generate excitement prior to a  Zoo Class fieldtrip or Zoo on Wheels visit.

Adaptations Hunt

Explore the Zoo with an Adaptations Hunt. This field trip activity promotes observation and discussion. Students work individually or in teams to classify and document adaptations of their favorite animals. Recommended for grades 2-6. Though, it's open-ended structure also works with teens, whose answers tend to show greater complexity.

Build an Animal

Boost your students' creative skills and reinforce their learning with Build an Animal. This classroom activity often works well as a wrap-up to habitats and adaptations units after your Zoo Class fieldtrip or Zoo on Wheels visit. See teacher notes for full lesson plan.
