The world’s fastest land animal, the
cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus) is losing its race for survival. Once common on five continents, the
cheetah is now an endangered species. A number of factors are threatening the
cheetahs that remain: loss of habitat, competition for territory with large predators, persecution by ranchers and depleted genetic variation.
The Zoo provides funding to the
Cheetah Conservation Fund (CCF), whose overall goal is to ensure the long-term survival of the
cheetah and its ecosystems through a multidisciplinary and integrated conservation program of research and education.
The Zoo has partnered with CCF on an exciting new project to train a scat detection dog. Read more about it in our Zoo blog.
