Wildlife Research at the Zoo

The Zoo promotes both onsite and offsite research in various scientific disciplines.

As part of its mission, the Zoo fosters research both in the wild and at the Zoo aimed at enhancing the protection of rare, endangered and vanishing wildlife species as well as improving the management and health of captive species. Historically, the Philadelphia Zoo has supported and encouraged basic and applied research in these fields: veterinary medicine, ecology, behavior, pathology, reproductive biology, genetics, wildlife diseases (including the impact of pollution on wild populations), animal nutrition, anatomy, microbiology, virology, demography, education, animal husbandry, animal management, conservation, horticulture and all empirical aspects of the exhibition and maintenance of wild animals in captive settings. Today, the Zoo continues to support and encourage noninvasive research in zoo biology and wildlife conservation.
