Day 1
Wed January 2, 2008
We are getting ready to leave for our Tierra del Fuego expedition to study Red Knots at their wintering grounds. The Red Knot is a small shorebird with an amazing migration that takes it from Tierra del Fuego all the way to the Arctic to breed. You can see this bird for yourself when it stops over in the Delaware Bay to refuel in May of each year. For a description of the project and the participants, check out the expedition blog at www.redknotexpedition.blogspot.com.
Today, the five of us (Dan, Bean, Susie, Skip and I) met at the Philadelphia Airport to begin our trip. The next 2 days are all about travel; Philadelphia to Miami, Miami to Santiago (overnight) then Santiage Chile to Punta Arenas and driving to our campsite in Tierra del Fuego. In all we will be travelling from early this morning and arriving in Tierra del Fuego Thursday evening to set up camp.
