Day 9

Today we drive down to Porvenir in the south to survey along the Bay and the Straights of Magellan south of Bahia Lomas to see if the knots may have relocated there.  We stop briefly at Cerro Sombrero to thank the Mayor for the use of their new facility and then we are off as it is a full day’s drive to Porvenir.  We stop at Puerto Percy on the way and the port looks pretty disused.  There are shorebirds but no red knots.  We do see our first Flightless steamer ducks, Dolphin gulls and Chilean skuas.

No luck finding red knots along the way to Porvenir so we look around town a little and then head back to camp.  Tomorrow is our last day in Tierra del Fuego before heading up to Torres del Paine for the second part of our trip.  Torres del Paine is a National Park where we expect to have some good birding although no red knots in the mountains.
