Hafa adai!

Mary Jane and I have had a very busy week. We have had news, news and more news here on Guam. Every news crew, newspaper and radio station has featured our conservation education program. On Wednesday, while teaching at JM Guerrero Elementary the local NBC news stopped by. The Pacific Daily News also stopped by JM Guerrero - see link: (U.S. Zoo Director Educates Students)

It has been great to see the community embrace our conservation efforts. We did 2 live interviews on K57 radio. The first interview was on the "Where we live program" and the host was fantastic. Peggy hosts the show every week and she is very interested in building an environmental awareness. In her spare time she has almost single handedly started a recycling program on Guam. On Thursday afternoon we did the Patti Arroyo show. You can listen to the show by logging on to www.k57.com (click on the K57 Audio Podcast and "10 January 08 Philadelphia Zoo researchers arrive on Guam"). Patti was great, full of energy and we loved chatting her with for a full hour!

The most rewarding part of this whole trip has been seeing the kids with huge smiles on their faces! They really seem to be enjoying the program and the message of protecting the wildlife of Guam looks like it is sinking in with every student. This first photo shows kids having lots of laughs at JM Guerrero Elementary and the second photo shows a young boy at Wettengel Elementary School absolutely amazed at the three pound ostrich egg. The students at Wettengel also gave the program a big thumbs up! Actually this photo shows the students demonstrating that bats have thumbs just like we do.

The teachers have been wonderful to work with. They have made us feel like family and their excitement and enthusiasm for this program can't even be described. As you can see in this photo the educational kits are a big hit!

Stay tuned for more exciting news from Guam!
