Other Birds
Many types of birds can be found throughout the Zoo. Here are a few of the most popular.
Southern ground hornbill
This is the largest of the hornbills, with an all black body, white wing feathers and a red throat patch.
Kea
An olive green parrot with a long curved bill. When flying, a flash of red under the wings can be seen.
Emu
The emu is the second largest living bird (the largest is the ostrich of Africa). The emu is flightless, and like other "ratite" birds (large flightless birds including the ostrich, cassowary, rhea and kiwi) it does not have a keel, used in flighted birds for anchoring flight muscles.
Humboldt Penguin
Penguins exhibit many adaptations to the basic bird body in order to swim well. Lightweight bones for flying became dense and heavy to combat buoyancy. Wings became efficient paddles, and penguins¹ small feet tuck under their torpedo-shaped bodies to streamline the body for swimming locomoton under water.
