White rhinos are large, gray and almost hairless. They can be distinguished from the other African rhinoceros - the black rhino - by their larger size, the muscular hump over their shoulders, and their square lips. All rhino species are poached for their horns, which has led them to the brink of extinction.

Elephants are unmistakable: their large size and long trunk are a unique combination. African elephants are the largest of all living land animals. Both males and females have tusks. The Philadelphia Zoo has supported elephant conservation in both Africa and Asia and is currently working to protect the endangered pygmy elephant of Borneo.

The tallest land mammal, the giraffe's long legs and neck allow them to eat leaves that most other browsers cannot reach.

The Great Asian rhinoceros, also known as the greater one-horned rhinoceros and the Indian rhinoceros, is the second-largest of the world’s five rhino species.

Hippos spend their days in or near water. At night they come out on land and walk long distances to graze on grass. By sunrise, they return to the safety of the water.

Mhorr gazelles are the largest of all true gazelles. Once found in some of the driest and most inhospitable parts of northern Africa, these elegant gazelles are now extinct in the wild.

The common or plains zebra is still found in large numbers in sub-saharan Africa. Their distinctive striped pattern may help confuse predators since it's difficult to pick one animal out of a blur of stripes

The sable antelope gets its name from it's dark, rich coat color. One of the largest species of antelope, the sable's impressive curved horns offer a good defense against predators.
