Moving in to
African Plains, across the visitor path from
Gus, are two new
addax, beautiful corkscrew-horned Saharan antelope.
Their facial markings resemble masks, which inspired our keepers to name the new addax Bruce and Richard – the “real life” names for Batman and Robin. As the addax settle in, they will be integrated with the Zoo’s
Mhorr gazelles, secretary bird, saddle-billed storks and crowned cranes. The addax is critically endangered due to hunting and habitat loss. Through support of the Sahara Conservation Fund, the Zoo is working to establish a protected area for the last known wild population of addax – about 100-200 animals, in the Termit Tin/Toumma area of the country of Niger.
