Philadelphia Zoo Opens Enrollment For Docents In Honor Of National Volunteer Month
4/4/2008 12:00:00 AM
The Philadelphia Zoo has a long history of volunteers who, within its gardens, connect families, wildlife and the environment we share. In recognition of April being National Volunteer Month, the Zoo’s Docent Council today announces it is accepting applications for the fall docent classes which take place at America’s first zoo Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. beginning Fall 2008.

People interested in becoming a Philadelphia Zoo docent take part in an 18-week training class, conducted by the Docent Council of the Zoo.  After completing their training, and working closely with Zoo staff, docents teach visitors about the Zoo’s animals and conservation efforts by providing one-on-one, interactive learning opportunities at exhibits and tours for schools, scouts and corporations. They also take part in special behind-the-scenes tours to learn how the Philadelphia Zoo operates and receive opportunities to visit other zoos and aquariums. Current Zoo Docents have logged nearly 25,000 hours of service last year alone.

Those interested in learning more about the Philadelphia Zoo docent program can attend special information sessions - Monday June 16 or Thursday July, 10 – at the Zoo. Please call 215-243-5317 or visit the Zoo’s website.
